Memphis Tennessee

Wed, 29 January 2003 - Arriving in Memphis, walking around the legendary Beale St, where BB King and countless other greats made a name for themselves. The competition was held in more than 10 clubs along this street.

The International Blues Challenge 2003

Above - Our stage where we peformed our two rounds for the semi-finals. We didn't win a prize from this year's International Blues Challenge, but the trip was an invaluable experience for the band, receiving excellent feedback for our performances. We gave it our best, had a good time onstage and got good responses from from the crowd, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to get us through to the finals. There were alot of good bands there, and was a learning experience for us, and at the same time it was an eye-opener to audiences there, seeing and hearing a blues band from Singapore for the first time. Again we'd like to acknowledge the support of Singapore International Foundation, Singapore Tourism Board and National Arts Council, without which this trip would not have been possible.

Below - Some of the other acts competing the same venue as ublues. A wonderful part of this experience was the friendship and camaraderie among musicians, despite the event being a competition. The blues certainly spoke across cultural barriers, with musicians and audiences alike connecting with each other through a music which is essentially human. A memorable part of this trip.

Below - BB Kings Blues Club. ublues band jammed here on the Sunday night of their say in Memphis and met up with some incredible musicians. Even though BB King wasn't there to play at the time, the depth of talent in Memphis (and indeed the rest of the USA) is quite incredible, with excellent musicians jamming in every club you visit.

With Charles, Ambassador to BB Kings Club and the sharpest dressed man on Beale St!
